How to Replace Ramp Springs on Trailer

How to Replace Ramp Springs on Trailer

Replacing heavy-duty ramp springs on your trailer, such as 2,000 lb Left & Right Spring Coils, requires careful handling due to the high tension in the springs. Here's a step-by-step guide to replace them safely:

⚠️ Safety First!

  • Wear safety glasses and gloves.

  • Make sure the trailer is on a flat, stable surface.

  • Use wheel chocks to prevent the trailer from moving.

🛠️ Tools & Materials Needed:

  • New Left & Right Ramp Springs (2,000 lb capacity)

  • Socket wrench and appropriate sockets

  • Pliers or vice grips

  • Hammer and punch (if needed for removing pins)

  • Grease or lubricant

  • Jack or support stands (if necessary)

📚 Step 1: Prep the Trailer

  • Lower the ramp to the ground to release tension from the springs.

  • Inspect the current springs and take note of their placement—left and right springs are wound in opposite directions.

  • Clean the area around the hinge and spring housing to make the removal process easier.

🔧 Step 2: Remove the Old Springs

  1. Secure the Ramp: Use a jack or support stands to hold the ramp steady while you work.

  2. Loosen Retaining Bolts: Using a socket wrench, loosen and remove the bolts securing the springs to the hinge or ramp.

  3. Remove the Springs: Carefully slide the springs off the hinge. If they are under tension, use pliers or vice grips to hold the spring while removing it.

🌀 Step 3: Install the New Springs

  1. Match the Springs: Verify that the replacement springs are the correct size and tension (left and right orientation matters!).

  2. Position the Springs: Place the left spring on the left side and the right spring on the right side of the hinge. Ensure the coils face the correct direction.

    • Left spring: Typically wound counterclockwise.

    • Right spring: Typically wound clockwise.

  3. Align the Holes: Align the holes in the spring brackets with the hinge pins.

  4. Insert Bolts or Pins: Secure the springs with bolts or pins. Tighten them using the socket wrench but do not overtighten.

🧽 Step 4: Lubricate and Test

  • Apply grease or lubricant to the spring coils and hinge points.

  • Slowly lift and lower the ramp to ensure smooth operation.

  • Check for proper tension and alignment. If the ramp feels too heavy or unbalanced, adjust the tension by repositioning the springs or tightening the bolts.

Step 5: Final Check

  • Double-check all bolts and pins for tightness.

  • Make sure the springs are properly secured and that the ramp operates smoothly.

⚠️ Pro Tips:

  • If the old springs are rusted or difficult to remove, use penetrating oil and allow it to sit for a few minutes.

  • Mark the original positions before removing the springs to ensure proper alignment.
